A native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Jerri earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at the University of Alabama’s Capstone College of Nursing, and began her career as a labor and delivery nurse in the Tuscaloosa/Northport area, where she discovered a love of assisting new moms with breastfeeding. After thirteen years in labor and delivery, Jerri chose to pursue lactation consulting full time and became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). As a lactation nurse, she worked with a number of preterm infants in the Level 3 NICU in Northport, and thus became acquainted with many of the challenges facing these mothers and babies. She also worked closely with area pediatricians to develop individual feeding plans for babies who needed extra support.
Jerri believes that the best path to successful breastfeeding is preventing problems before they arise, consistent with Drs. Shoemaker and Jones who recommend each expectant mother schedule a prenatal lactation visit so she has the education and knowledge required to make the best choices for her baby. Jerri believes that moms need positive encouragement and that breastfeeding is not an all-or-nothing proposition. Breastfeeding comes easily and naturally to many babies and moms, but for others – including Jerri herself with her first child – it is a struggle, and she is willing and able to support moms in reaching their breastfeeding goals.
Jerri lives in Spanish Fort with her husband of 30 years and their teenage daughter, and enjoys visiting with her two older sons who reside in Tuscaloosa. She enjoys riding bikes, listening to music, and doing pretty much anything outdoors.
